California Chrome’s composure is result of stringent training: Kalley Krickeberg

Regardless of the chaotic environment at the recently held Belmont Stakes, California Chrome remained so composed and chilled because of training from way back when he was a baby, a demonstrator of techniques for training young horses said.

Demonstrating techniques for training horses at the 2014 Western States Horse Expo on Saturday, Kalley Krickeberg said that he was very impressed with Chrome's demeanor.

Praising Chrome for his demeanor, Krickeberg said, "I was so impressed with Chrome's demeanor. That horse was so composed, so chilled. That's the result of training from way back when he was a baby."

He recalled Chrome as he was speaking about a tall and gangly foal from Elk Grove, who showed off his good manners at Cal Expo but was still feeling a bit of nervousness in the limelight.

The foal was born Count Me Twice, a pure-bred mare that resides at Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove. The mare has participated in several races and won many of those races.

Krickeberg stressed that the foal, with proper training, could become the next California Chrome, who was thrust into a worldwide spotlight as he vied for the Triple Crown. But, he failed to grab the title and finished fourth.

Other trainers like Bob Avila used the event to teach a rapt audience how to choose a foal, and address various issues related to racehorses, such as saddle fit and hoof health.
